Best conditions

The sections open for swimming shift by the day with lifeguard staffing. NYC Parks posts an updated section map each morning after 10 a.m., and marks any closed section on the sand itself with signs and a red flag.

Getting through the gate

Free, no gate. Lifeguards are on duty daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Memorial Day weekend through the Sunday after Labor Day (September 13, 2026 this year); swimming is prohibited outside those hours and in any section closed by posted signs or a red flag. Visitors must be off the sand from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. daily, and the boardwalk itself closes from 1 a.m. to 5 a.m.

Swimming and wading are allowed only when a lifeguard is on duty, in season; NYC Parks marks a closed beach or section with posted signs and a red flag, Rip currents are the standing hazard on this open Atlantic beach; NYC Parks' own water safety guidance describes how to spot and escape one, and points swimmers to the National Weather Service for more on rip current safety, The NYC Health Department samples the water for bacteria weekly through the beach season, starting a month before it opens, and also tracks rainfall and pollution sources. It posts a yellow advisory sign when swimming is not recommended or a red closed sign when swimming is not allowed, and keeps current results on its NYC Beach Water Quality Map
