Best conditions

The shoreside tidepools show only at low tide. Summer mornings often start foggy and usually clear by mid-morning.

Getting through the gate

Day-use parking runs $5 an hour up to $15 a day, a little more at Los Trancos, and $20 on holidays and summer weekends.

Parking

Five day-use areas off Pacific Coast Highway with several hundred spaces. Los Trancos is the largest, and Reef Point and Pelican Point are bluff-top lots with trails down to the beach.

Protection

Crystal Cove State Marine Conservation Area, effective 2012. Recreational take is limited to finfish by hook and line or spear plus spiny lobster and sea urchin. Everything else is off limits, and no living thing may be taken from the tidepools.

Rip currents, Sudden waves can sweep people off the shore and the tidepool rocks, Surf reaches the base of the 80 ft bluffs at high tide, The cliff faces above the beach are unstable, and climbing them is prohibited
