- The clearest water is on the outer reefs nearer the Gulf Stream. Visibility typically runs 25 to 100 ft and averages about 50.
- Protection
- The reef tract sits inside the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, and reefs including Molasses and Carysfort are Sanctuary Preservation Areas where fishing and touching coral are banned. The sanctuary keeps more than 600 free first-come mooring buoys and prohibits anchoring on living coral.
- Watch for
- Swift current can run at the deeper sites of 100 ft and more, per NOAA's Shipwreck Trail guidance, The Spiegel Grove sits in 120 to 130 ft and the Duane in 120 ft, far deeper than the reef sites and a different grade of dive
