Getting in

Shore access, walk in off the sand

Best conditions

A right-hand point wave over a cobblestone bottom that feeds on south swells and breaks best spring through fall. Big days link rides of 100 yards or more from Second Point toward the Malibu Pier.

Getting through the gate

No per-person beach fee. The only charge is State Parks vehicle day-use parking.

Parking

State Parks day-use lot at Malibu Lagoon, 8 a.m. to sunset, $3 an hour or $12 for the day. LA County lists about 90 spaces plus street parking on Pacific Coast Highway.

Protection

The break fronts Malibu Lagoon State Beach, a California State Parks unit. Surfrider Beach was dedicated as the world's first World Surfing Reserve in October 2010, an honorific stewardship designation run by a Local Stewardship Council.
