Getting through the gate

Beach driving is $30 a day or $150 a year, free for registered county residents. Off-beach county lots are $20 a day.

Parking

Cars drive and park on the sand in the marked zones. Poles near the dunes mark conservation zones where driving and parking are not allowed. Off-beach county lots exist, and the city lots at Flagler Avenue and 27th Street are run and priced separately.

The International Shark Attack File calls surrounding Volusia County the shark bite capital of the world, with 94 unprovoked bites from 2012 through 2021, none of them fatal, Rip currents can pull even strong swimmers out; county advice is to swim near a lifeguard and, if caught, swim parallel to shore, Vehicles drive and park on the sand in the marked beach-driving zones, and Beach Patrol suspends driving when tides narrow the lane to less than 30 feet, The county flies the state warning flags, where double red closes the water and purple warns of dangerous marine life
