The beach itself has no gate or entry fee. The Ocean Beach Municipal Pier is closed to the public; city engineers found structural rehabilitation infeasible, and the city is planning a full replacement on a multi-year schedule it marks as subject to change.

Rip currents are the most threatening hazard on San Diego's coast per the city's lifeguards, who name rock jetties and piers, both of which break up this beach, as where they typically form, Swimming, wading, surfing or skin diving within 75 feet of any city-owned fishing pier is barred, which includes the closed Ocean Beach Pier; the city's pier project page cites San Diego Municipal Code 63.20.16 for the rule
