Best conditions

A sand-bottom beach break running from Kelly's Cove at the north end to Sloat Boulevard at the south, best with a northwest, west-northwest or west swell and an offshore wind out of the east, October through January, per Surfline. The tide moving in and out of the Golden Gate reshapes the sandbars by the hour, so the wave changes through the day and along the length of the beach, and getting past the impact zone is often hard even when the surf is small.

Getting through the gate

No National Park Service entrance fee; within Golden Gate NRA, only Muir Woods and the Alcatraz ferry charge, and Ocean Beach is neither. Fires are allowed only in fire rings between Stairwells 15 and 20, March 1 through October 31, 6 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., with no fires at all from November 1 through the end of February, and no glass or alcohol on the beach. Dogs may be under voice control at Ocean Beach under GGNRA's 1979 Pet Policy, except in the Snowy Plover Protection Area from Stairwell 21 south to Sloat Boulevard, where they must be leashed, six feet or shorter, from July 1 through May 15.

Parking

The Upper Great Highway, which once ran the length of the beach from Lincoln Way to Sloat Boulevard, closed permanently to cars in March 2025 and reopened that April as Sunset Dunes, a car-free park run by San Francisco Recreation and Parks. City-owned parking lots serve the beach and close at 10 p.m. each night; generally accessible restrooms sit at the corner of Sloat Boulevard and the Great Highway.

Protection

Ocean Beach is part of Golden Gate National Recreation Area, run by the National Park Service. The stretch from Stairwell 21 south to Sloat Boulevard is the Ocean Beach Snowy Plover Protection Area, set by a 2008 federal rule (36 CFR 7.97(d)) to protect the western snowy plover, a threatened species that winters on the beach.

The National Park Service describes the water at Ocean Beach as 'frigid' and the currents as 'hazardous for all but the most experienced surfers'; its Golden Gate NRA safety page says most beaches in the recreation area are not recommended for swimming, names Ocean Beach specifically as one that presents hazards for waders, and recommends swimming only where a lifeguard is on duty, The same safety page describes rip currents as 'strong, swift-moving channels of water rushing from the shore out to sea,' calls them extremely powerful since even the strongest swimmers have drowned in them, and notes that children and adults have been swept away even in shallow water, It also names sneaker waves, which can 'wash farther up the shore' and pull people in with little or no warning, and shorebreak, which it says causes trauma injuries, notably to the neck, Cold-water immersion is its own hazard: the same page warns it can quickly bring on numbness, confusion, disorientation, loss of body control, unconsciousness and death, Surfline's guide for the beach lists sharks among the hazards here, along with the cold-water effects it calls frozen foreheads and noodle arms and broken boards, and its difficulty notes say paddling out is often hard even when the surf is small
