Getting in

Shore access, walk in off the sand

Best conditions

The Beach Patrol guards the sand from the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend into late September, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays and 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on weekends and holidays, covering Pennsylvania Avenue south to Prospect Street; coverage often narrows to Pennsylvania Avenue to Hickman Street later in the season.

Getting through the gate

No gate or fee to reach the beach or boardwalk; parking above is the only charge, and no one is allowed on the sand from 1 a.m. to 5 a.m. Leashed dogs are allowed on the beach and boardwalk only from September 16 to May 14, when lifeguards are off duty; they are barred entirely, including emotional-support animals, from May 15 to September 15. Fishing on the beach is allowed only in a designated area at the north end.

Parking

Metered spaces citywide run $4 an hour, enforced 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily from May 15 to September 15, paid by card, quarters at multispace stations, or the ParkMobile app; most spaces cap at 12 hours, except Grove Park and the 30-minute spaces. Non-metered blocks need a permit in the same May 15 to September 15 window, enforced 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., sold from April 1 at $25 a day up to $325 for a transferable season pass. Parking is free the rest of the year.

Watch for

The Beach Patrol posts a hazard flag daily by 9 a.m. at its Baltimore Avenue headquarters, green for little hazard up to double red when swimming is not allowed at all, plus purple for marine pests; conditions can change through the day, The flags on lifeguard chairs are separate from the hazard flag, marking the stand's location and helping reunite lost children with parents rather than signaling hazard level
