Getting in

Shore access, walk in off the sand

Best conditions

Early morning is the shelling window, and the island's east-west set catches a wide mix of shells. The city describes the surf here as gentle.

Getting through the gate

Reaching the island means the Lee County causeway toll: $6 for a two-axle vehicle, charged only in the Sanibel direction, plus a $3 administrative fee for pay-by-plate. The beaches themselves are free, funded by the paid parking.

Parking

Paid beach-park lots at $5 an hour, enforced around the clock and paid by mobile app. The Tarpon Bay Road lot holds 76 spaces about a quarter mile from the sand.

Protection

Taking or possessing live shells is prohibited under Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission Rule 68B-26, which also covers sand dollars, sea stars and sea urchins. A first offense carries a $500 fine and 60 days in jail. All shelling is banned inside the J.N. Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge.
