Getting in

Shore access, walk in off the sand

Best conditions

Winter brings the biggest Gulf swell and is when surfers are out most. The wind behind the island's kiteboarding name blows across the Laguna Madre on the island's far side, where H2O Sports, a kite school on the island, calls fall and spring the steadiest seasons.

Getting through the gate

Free at every public beach access, with no gate or fee.

Parking

28 public accesses cross the dunes to the Gulf beach and 19 of them have lots, more than 400 spaces in all. Every access has a walk-over or mat, and the city bans motor vehicles from the sand.

Protection

The dunes at the accesses sit east of the city's Dune Protection Line under Texas Natural Resources Code chapter 63, and disturbing them needs a city permit.

The National Weather Service's Brownsville office rates rip current risk for these beaches daily, and the city's guidance is to check the posted beach signage before swimming, Red tide reaches the Texas coast in some years, tracked and reported by Texas Parks and Wildlife and the state health department
