Best conditions

A right point break that wants a west to northwest swell at low to medium tide, with calm wind or wind out of the east. It holds surf from waist high to double overhead and bigger, and is best from November through March.

Getting through the gate

No fee. The park and beach are open 4 a.m. to 2 a.m.; the parking lot keeps shorter hours, 5 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Parking

Free lot at Swami's Seaside Park, 1298 South Coast Highway 101. When it fills, the overflow is roadside parking on the highway outside the entrance.

Protection

Swami's State Marine Conservation Area. It is unlawful to injure, damage, take or possess marine life here, except recreational fishing by hook-and-line from shore and spearfishing for white seabass, yellowtail and other listed pelagic species.

Watch for

The bottom is rock, with a shallow inside ledge that gets faster and shallower at low tide, Surfline rates the wave intermediate to advanced, not for beginners, and rates the crowd 'hideous to unbearable', Parts of the reef are exposed at low tide, when tide pools form at the point just north of the stairs
