Rip currents form more often around low tide and near piers and jetties; city guidance is to swim near a lifeguard tower and watch the beach flags, and the National Weather Service says to swim parallel to shore to break free, NOAA current tables show flood and ebb past 2 knots at the Savannah River entrance off the island's north end, a few miles up the beach from this stretch; the water by the jetties is the island's dangerous corner
