Best conditions

The park says warm Gulf water is swimmable most of the year. Speckled trout bite for surf fishers year round, best in spring and summer; redfish move into casting range in fall and winter.

Getting through the gate

$3 per person to enter, free for seniors 62 and older and children 3 and under. The gate is open 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. every day; the entrance station itself is staffed 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, Saturday and the day before a holiday.

Watch for

Rip currents and heavy currents form on this Gulf-front beach; the park stations life rings along the shore and tells swimmers to use the buddy system, Stingrays and jellyfish are being seen increasingly in these waters, and the park advises shuffling your feet while wading so a stingray moves off before you step on it, Dolphins and larger fish sometimes move into the shallows and can steal bait or pull an angler into deeper, more dangerous water
